Diabetes isn’t a lightning bolt that strikes out of the clear blue sky, zapping innocent victims at random.

It’s a slow-motion train wreck - one you can see coming from hundreds of miles away, and for years ahead of time, as you pack on the pounds and your blood sugar numbers slowly creep higher at every physical.

All you have to do is slam on the brakes and you can stop the disease in its tracks. Yet amazingly, millions of people glide right through all the warning signals with barely a glance. And as a result, any day now, America will welcome its 30 millionth diabetic, meaning nearly 1 in 10 of us will have this devastating disease.

But as shocking as that is, it’s not the big number I want to share with you today. I’ve got a much bigger one... and a much more important one: 86 million - more than 1 in 4 of us.

That’s how many Americans are living right now with pre-diabetes - who are living that slow-motion train wreck at this very moment - and in most cases doing squat to stop the oncoming disaster.

If you’re one of them, there’s an important message you need to hear right now: It’s NOT too late!

No matter how far down the tracks you’ve let your train go - no matter how badly you’ve let yourself go - a pre-diabetes diagnosis can be a good thing because it means you don’t have diabetes yet.

Magnesium: You were expecting something a little more exotic, weren’t you?

Magnesium is so basic that most people never give it a second thought.?And doctors rarely check magnesium levels since it’s not part of the standard blood chemistry panel. As a result, it’s quietly become one of the nation’s leading nutritional deficiencies, with up to 80 percent of Americans falling short in this essential mineral.

It’s used for more than 300 functions in the body, including glucose regulation. And in a study released over the summer, more than 50 percent of all pre-diabetics given magnesium supplements saw improvements in fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels as well as insulin resistance.

In the placebo group, just 7 percent saw any benefit.

Try munching on some pumpkin seeds, cashews and sunflower seeds to raise your magnesium levels even further or purchase a quality magnesium supplement. But if your stools become too soft (think ‘Milk of Magnesia’) cut back on the dose.

Curcumin: This compound, hidden deep inside the delicious spice turmeric, could be the “exotic” secret you were seeking. Turmeric is the golden yellow spice that gives Indian foods such as curry their distinct color and flavor.

We already know that curcumin helps ward of dementia. But today I want to share the inside scoop on curcumin’s power to prevent diabetes. In an impressive study out of Thailand a few years back, 240 pre-diabetics were given either curcumin supplements or a placebo. Nine months later, 1 in 6 patients on the placebo developed diabetes versus NONE who took the supplement.

If you have a fondness for Indian food by all means dig in. But if you’re not a fan that’s fine because you can get your curcumin the same way those folks in the study did - in a supplement. You’ll find them online or in any store that has a decent supplement selection.

Fresh Dairy: The very saturated fats your own doctor will tell you to avoid at all costs are actually critical to your health. And while ALL natural animal fats are excellent for you, one set of fats in particular could play a critical role in preventing the pre-diabetes progressing into diabetes.

It’s called C17:0, or heptadecanoic acid, and it’s found in real butter (NOT margarine), and also in whole milk and some types of fish.

A new study looked at why dolphins (like “Flipper”), which suffer many of the same health problems as humans, often develop pre-diabetes but rarely full-blown diabetes.

The answer is C17:0! In just six months, dolphins that ate a diet rich in this fat saw their glucose, insulin and triglyceride levels all return to normal.

You won’t find C17:0 in tasteless low-fat dairy... only the real deal will do. And if you want the best of the best, be sure to get yours fresh and raw from the farm - unpasteurized and un-homogenized.

Fish oil: I’ve been saying it for years; whether you have pre-diabetes or not, you should be taking a fish oil supplement. It’s the cheapest, easiest and most efficient way to give your heart a coat of armor and bulletproof your brain.

But that’s not all the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil can do for you. They can also raise your levels of adiponectin, the hormone you need for normal blood sugar (glucose) regulation. The higher your adiponectin levels, the lower your risk of both diabetes and heart disease.

Fish oil can also help improve your insulin sensitivity, another critical marker of diabetes risk.

Benfotiamine: Every time you eat some sugar - any time you chow down on carbs of any kind - your cells end up getting soaked in a waterfall of sugar.

As your blood sugar rises, the sweet stuff races through your body, slamming every cell along the way. That mad dash causes the damage that helps usher in diabetes and its nightmarish complications.

But this fat soluble form of thiamine (vitamin B1) helps your body use glucose more effectively so your poor cells don’t drown in sugar.

And since benfotiamine is fat-soluble, your body can use it up to 500 times more efficiently than regular water soluble vitamin B1.

I take benfotiamine with my own meals, especially when I eat out since you never know where sugar may be lurking. Make it part of your routine as well.

Chromium: If you want proof that the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is pillow pals with Big Pharma and perfectly happy to have a nation full of pill-popping, insulin-injecting, sugar-checking diabetics, you don’t need to look any further than the story behind chromium.

This trace mineral has been proven repeatedly to optimize glucose metabolism because it becomes Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF) in your body. In plain talk, that means chromium can help both diabetics and pre-diabetics keep their blood-sugar levels under control.

In one major review, 13 of 15 studies found chromium can provide a significant improvement in blood sugar control. Four of those studies looked at fasting insulin levels, and found improvements of 30 percent.

Yet despite the overwhelming evidence the ADA insists that, in their words, “benefit from chromium supplementation in people with diabetes or obesity has not been conclusively demonstrated” - and they flat out refuse to recommend it.

Keep listening to this kind of advice from the ADA, and other so-called authorities like them, and you’re practically guaranteed to get in that train wreck. So put them on mute and tune in to my advice instead. For a safe and inexpensive natural solution to blood sugar control a 200 mcg chromium supplement should do the trick

Alpha lipoic acid: There’s nothing more natural than this antioxidant, because your own body makes the compound on its own. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) helps with insulin function and blood sugar control... but if you’re having blood sugar issues, and are pre-diabetic, your body’s probably not making enough to keep up.

You can get more ALA from a diet rich in red meat and organ meats. But if you really want to make sure you’re getting what you need seek out a quality supplement too.

Of course, all the best nutrients in the world will only take you so far. If you’ve got pre-diabetes, it’s time to change what you eat, too.

Don’t worry; it’s not nearly as difficult as you fear. You don’t have to give up all the foods you love. In fact you can eat more of some of them than ever - especially if you love bacon, steak, eggs, cheese and fresh dairy.

If you desert the carbs and truly COMMIT to a diet rich in natural animal fats and protein - as well as give the seven blood-sugar controlling supplements a try - I can practically guarantee that you won’t become America’s 30 millionth diabetic.
