The mother of all antioxidants

It’s called glutathione (pronounced GLOOTA-THIGH-OWN). Better get used to that name. It’s absolutely vital for meeting the daily attacks on your health head on——especially when it comes to autoimmune disease. In fact, if you want to make it virtually impossible for your body to launch an attack against itself, your entire glutathione-system has to be in good working order.

But maintaining adequate levels of glutathione isn’t about pumping your body full of the stuff and hoping for the best. There’s a little more to it than that. The key to a healthy G-system is in its ability to recycle itself.

For centuries, this was no problem at all. Now, this system needs an “out of order” sign to warn people that it’s not doing its job. G-system meltdown: The grave danger of toxic overload

There has been an alarming increase in autoimmune diseases over the past few decades. Rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, Parkinson’s disease... the list goes on. And all of it can be tied to a malfunctioning G-system.

The main causes of autoimmune diseases include toxins (pesticides, solvents, and industrial chemicals); exposure to toxic metals (mercury, cadmium, lead, arsenic, and aluminum); unmanaged stress; and nutritional deficiencies.

The presence of heavy metals in your body causes you to produce the antibodies that can lead to autoimmune disease. Nutritional deficiencies can cause a compromised immune system because they promote the creation of free radicals that damage your cells. And unmanaged stress increases your risk of ALL diseases, not just autoimmune disease.

Stay healthy and disease-free with your?body’s personal bodyguard

Free radicals are unstable molecules because they are unpaired electrons. In order to become stable, they steal electrons from your mitochondria, which not only destroys your mitochondria, it also causes inflammation, degeneration, and disease in the process.

Glutathione acts as your body’s personal bodyguard by essentially throwing itself in front of the mitochondria——protecting your cell’s energy producers, and sacrificing itself in the process.

As a result, the glutathione ends up with an unpaired electron, which technically turns it into a free radical itself. If you have healthy glutathione levels, this isn’t a problem because the unpaired glutathione will pair with the available one, which recycles it back to its disease-fighting, body-guarding state.

However, when stress and toxic overload prevent your body from producing more glutathione, you become deficient. Lack of adequate glutathione leaves you defenseless. Not only is your bodyguard gone——you don’t even have a bulletproof vest. All of this is the perfect storm for chronic illness.

Studies have shown time and again that there is a direct tie between the breakdown of this system and autoimmune disease. In fact, there’s a direct tie between the breakdown of this system and ALL disease. A study published in the Lancet showed that the highest glutathione levels were found in healthy young people. The older the patient——and the sicker the patient——the lower the glutathione levels.

Bottom line: If you’re going to manage your autoimmune disease, you need to get this recycling system up and running. So let’s talk about how to do that.

How to boost your G-levels

First of all, you have to reduce the stressors that are responsible for disrupting your glutathione system. The big ones include food intolerances, lack of sleep, leaky gut, hectic schedule, and blood sugar imbalances. Addressing these factors alone should get your G-system back to its body-guard status——and your autoimmune dysfunction (whatever it may be) could begin to experience dramatic improvements.

But there are other steps you can take to get your G-system back to working order.

Start with N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Studies have found that NAC plays a critical role keeping your glutathione system functioning properly by helping to replenish your glutathione stores.

The authors of a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, said, “NAC offers useful adjunct therapy to increase production against oxidative stress, improve immune system function, and increase detoxification of acetaminophen and other drugs. These findings suggest NAC therapy could be valuable in other clinical situations in which there is [glutathione] deficiency.”

And the Journal of Molecular Medicine reported that NAC doesn’t just increase glutathione——it also improves immune cell function.

But don’t stop there. Boost your glutathione stores by stocking up on compounds that your body turns into glutathione: gotu kola, milk thistle, and L-glutamine.

Then add selenium and Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), both of which help glutathione to perform its bodyguard duties and are vital for the recycling process.

Finally, add plenty of sulfur-rich foods, such as garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables. Sulfur is an important component of glutathione’s detox duties.
