All eyes on vitamin D

Just when you think the benefits of vitamin D couldn’t possibly continue to add up, another study comes out showing yet another benefit of this ace-in-the-hole vitamin. This time, researchers found that vitamin D could help you keep your eyesight as you get older.

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a chronic, progressive eye disease that causes a blind spot to form in the center of your vision. There is no cure for age-related macular degeneration. Your best bet is to prevent it from happening in the first place—and it looks like one of the best ways to do that is by loading up on vitamin D.

Researchers studied 1,313 women between 50 and 79 years old as part of the “Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease.” Each woman had a blood test to determine her blood levels of vitamin D. Of the 1,313 women, 241 developed early-stage ARMD, and 26 developed advanced ARMD.

The study, published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, showed that women with the highest intake of vitamin D had a 59-percent lower risk of ARMD compared to those who had the lowest intake.
