It's no secret. Drugs used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are not merely dangerous--they're downright deadly. More and more kids are dropping dead of heart attacks and other heart-related issues--and more and more parents are blaming it on the psychotropic drugs used to treat their child's supposed ADHD.
I'm telling you--if something doesn't happen soon to shut down the ADHD drug cartel, thousands more children are destined to lose their lives--or at the very least to have them greatly altered-- because Big Pharma has decided to capitalize on normal childhood behavior and absentee parenting.
Candy from a doctor: cocaine lollipops and morphine bubble gum
Kids are being fed legal, addictive stimulant drugs--ones that, in case you didn't know, are classified as Schedule II stimulant drugs--the exact same classification as morphine, cocaine, and other narcotics and amphetamines.
Surprised? You shouldn't be--not when you consider their well-documented side effects. This list should scare the you-know-what out of any parents with children on such drugs. I won't take six pages to describe the deadly side effects, but I'll hit a few of the more serious ones. Take a look: heart attacks, growth problems, blood disorders, and psychosis. (That's right--we're talking a severe mental disorder that brings about delusions and hallucinations.)
Travis Thompson, Ph.D, from the University of Minnesota and Klaus R. Unna, M.D., from the University of Illinois reported that "perhaps the best-known effect of chronic stimulant administration is psychosis. Psychosis has been associated with chronic use of several stimulants: e.g., amphetamines, methylphenidate, phenmetrazine, and cocaine."
It gets worse. Children who are or have been on ADHD drugs have an increased risk of committing suicide.
Before I go any further, there's something I should probably tell you. Much of the information I found on the horrors of these drugs came from an essay written by Dennis H. Clarke, the president of a Scientology group called the Citizen's Commission on Human Rights. (The essay is called "How Psychiatry Is Making Drug Addicts Out of America's School Children.")
Now, I'm sure you'll agree that Scientologists are about as wacky as they come. I don't put much stock in any organization that believes in galactic confederacies and has hefty buy-in fees But in the interest of not throwing the baby out with the bathwater, there is one part of Scientologists' mission that I appreciate and support whole-heartedly: the fight against the abuses of psychiatry and psychology.
Remember Tom Cruise's shameless attack of Brook Shields for taking the post-natal anti-depressant drug Paxil? I don't necessarily agree with his approach, but I do agree with the message--any drug that alters your brain chemistry should be avoided like the plague. There's no end to the potential damage it could do. And when it comes to kids taking ADHD drugs, the effects can be especially devastating.
Even the American Psychiatric Association admits that suicide is the major adverse reaction of withdrawal from these drugs. Clarke reports that "symptoms usually peak within two to four days after withdrawal of the drugs although depression and irritability may persist for months. Suicide risk can persist for years. Studies have shown that approximately 15 percent of the children on ADHD drugs will threaten, attempt, or actually commit suicide by the age of 18." He goes on to explain that most psychiatrists blame the withdrawal effects on "underlying mental illness coming to the surface." What quackery!! These ghouls are killing our children! How dare they blame it on the parents' or the child's genes!
But even the kids who are lucky enough to escape such "side effects" are still faced with increased risks of drug abuse and a criminal lifestyle.
Want specifics? Here's the nightmarish truth about what I like to call the King of Speed (from a National Institute for Mental Health study mentioned in Clarke's essay):
- 46 percent of the children raised on these drugs are charged with at least one major felony by the time they reach 18
- 30 percent are charged with two or more such crimes by 18 years old
- 25 percent of these children are locked up in mental institutions or prisons by age 18 (remember that psychosis is a known side effect)
- 15 percent will threaten, attempt, or actually commit suicide by the age of 18
Susan Schenk, a psycho-pharmacologist from Texas A&M University, conducted a study of 5,000 children with ADHD from adolescence to adulthood and concluded that children treated with ADHD drugs are three times more likely to develop a taste for cocaine.
When you put it that way, it becomes painfully obvious why children experience such drastic withdrawal effects when coming off such drugs. Imagine force-feeding a child cocaine multiple times a day for years, trying to "wean" him off the drug, and then blaming the inevitable withdrawal effects on an underlying brain disease! Yes, I know. It's absurd. That's my whole point.
