LETTERS: All you need is a cow, a bucket, and a sense of adventure

 “My mom grew up on the family farm in the Republic of Panama drinking raw milk. But when she came to the States, she began drinking bottled milk that was pasteurized and homogenized. Now she’s lactose intolerant and has to drink a special dairy product that’s lactose free. I’m also lactose intolerant and can only drink rice milk. The folks at Raw Truth say that lactose intolerant people can drink raw milk. I’d like to give it a whirl to see how I would react to it, but I’m not sure how to get it.

I happen to live in dairy country in California, but I don’t have up close and personal contact with cows. I suppose I could hop a fence sometime with a bucket...”

WCD: It’s amazing how the nutrition experts have missed the boat on lactose intolerance. One of the major causes of this common condition is the very milk product they recommend to their patients- pasteurized, homogenized milk. Raw milk has a form of sugar called lactose. When you pasteurize, homogenize, and radiate the milk under artificial UV light in the dairy display case, some of the lactose is converted to beta-lactose. This abnormal form of lactose is a major cause of lactose intolerance.

In the meantime, I suppose you could hop a fence while toting a bucket, but I think I’d talk to the farmer first. Or you could talk to the manager of your local health food store about ordering raw milk.
