Could your bra cause breast cancer?

“A friend advised me not to wear a bra and, if I insisted, not to wear it more than eight hours a day. She said it was directly related to breast cancer! She was quite adamant about it. As a preventive medicine specialist, I am sure you have an opinion on this. I’d be interested to know what it is.”

A. What is the first thing a mother thinks of as she sees her daughter starting to bud? A training bra, of course. But your friend is right on the money; the relationship between wearing a bra and breast cancer is nothing short of astounding.

A woman who wears a bra all the time, even to bed, is 125 times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who has never worn one. The 24-hour bra wearers face a horrendous 75 percent chance of contracting breast cancer.

Action to take:

Don’t start your young daughter on a “training bra.” You are training her in a very dangerous habit.

Look for the book, Dressed to Kill, by Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer, in your local library or bookstore. (If you can’t find it, it’s available from www.amazon.com.) It is a must read for all women. After about two chapters, you’ll probably burn your bra and never look back.
